New Bern and the Budweiser Clydesdales

When my husband and I went to New Bern a couple months back we were shopping and overheard that the Budweiser Clydesdale horses were scheduled to appear at Union Point Park on the waterfront the next day.  My photographer eyes lit up and immediately I envisioned grand images of these majestic horses by the waterfront, click-clopping down the street,  my camera at the ready to photograph these beauties at every turn.  I had even brought my 70-200 lens so I knew it was just meant to be!

Turns out, so did about 10,000 other people.  Seriously, any hopes of grand images were dashed when I saw how many people showed up.  I think the entire city of New Bern was there.  Any everyone had either a camera, cell phone or iPad ready to take pictures too.

Initially I was disappointed, yes.  But really, they were all there to do the same thing I was.  Can’t fault them for that.  So I just went with the flow and did the best I could, making a point just to enjoy the show rather than expect grand images.

Because of my big lens, however, I was asked a few times if I was with the press.  I should have said yes…  Maybe I could have gotten closer.   🙂

First the horses were set up by the waterfront.  They were active and seemed to be talking to one another while waiting.

This guy really was with the press.  I don’t think he had it easy either.

Once they started out, they circled the waterfront park a few times, pulling the famous beer wagon.

Then they made their way out of the park to follow a route in the streets of downtown.  I found a second level porch of a local business and asked some people that were already on the porch if I could join them.  They graciously said yes.  I was hoping my vantage point being above the crowd would help some.  It did a little, but the crushing crowd was still blocking most of the view.

The horses stopped for a minute to allow people to take some pictures.  I loved the dalmatian!  He would raise his paw up to wave.

I decided not to follow the horses when they started up again, so my final shot was of their beautiful hooves in perfect rhythm.
